The beauty of the lake is always changing,

With the light, the weather and the season.

Yet each change holds a splendor of its own,

Each viewing precious for its own reason.

In sunshine, golden stars dance across the water.

Moonlight shines a beacon in the peaceful night.

The wind causes whitecaps to erupt and roll,

While calm brings assorted reflections of light.

The water has a new costume each day,

Perhaps gray or green, aqua or blue.

Though each view is different, the lake is the lake,

Lovely in its every color, mood and hue.

My thoughts of the lake remind me of you,

My wonderful, loving partner in life.

Through sunny days and stormy times,

We’ve stayed together as husband and wife.

Your love is my beacon, my star and my light;

All your colors and moods are precious to me.

You make every day an enchanting delight,

What has it been like to be married for a Year?

Well, foremost i must say, i have learnt a whole lot in the space of our 265 days of “togetherness”. 

And today i have come to the realization that a successful marriage is NOT a monopoly of one partner, while the other stands uncooperative.  For a Marriage to be successful, BOTH parties,must work FERVENTLY together to make it work.  

There will always be reasons, infact untold reasons to quit, there will be distractions flying around the corners on the house, all pointing in the same one direction – THE EXIT DOOR. But, if you know that your coming out strong in spite of the turbulent storm is more important to you  than adding to the statistics of Failed marriages, then you will do your best to make it work.

How can you describe your Challenges?

Let me start this way. Imagine, you have grown up to the age of having a car, and you look around to find one classic ride you fell in love with and you dreamnt to have them BUT you don’t have a licence yet and you don’t even know how to drive. 

Your next step will surely be to get your drivers licence which will of course show you are ready to take responsibility and next you will get settle down with your choice car.

Next you start your learning process which involves you making the mistake of starting your Car without putting your gear on neutral or holding your clutch, and more mistakes like you taking a side turn without traffickating, Other  mistakes like you pressing your accelerator suddenly without you balancing it with your clutch. and many more.

Some during this learning process , may get frustrated and see it as a waste of precious time. They focus on the challenges in the learning process instead of looking ahead to the blessings and rewards of been an expert  behind the wheels…  

If you happen to pass the learning process, you will become an expert and confidently, you will drive your new exotic ride anywhere you choose to go.

Marriage is like That!

We all come into it, with no previous experience, we learnt the art of staying with another partner with whom we sometimes have no bearing with, different cultural bar-ground  different upbringing, different idiosyncrasies, different emotional intelligence and different view of life.

How do we cope?  First, we may be tempted to think the solution is execute a program that will wipe off all what we hate in our partner and replace them with what we love to see in our partner.  Honestly, it doesn’t work that way because we are so different from those operating systems. 

We have to learn how to really cut ourselves into HALVES which is the biblical meaning of Two Becoming One. (Will discuss this is fully in another article).

We have to let go of our pride, and be more tolerant. Really, no one is perfect on this but, if we try harder at tolerating one another, we will enjoy more blessings in our union.

What Other Challenges did you experience?

Another one is the wisdom to let go of your old treasures and replace it with healthy ones.What do i mean? Show me your friend, i will tell you who you are. That adage works perfectly in marriage institution. If you can show me your friend,  i will tell you if you are experiencing a peaceful marriage or if your union is taking a nosedive to extinction!

I had to Let GO of an old time friend all because of saving my marriage. Why because the success of my marriage was more important to me than my friendship with him. I have been friend with this guy even before he got married. and right after i got married, he came with ideas of how he has been running his own family.

He told me meennn, there is a lot you need to know Seun, you need to hold this women with IRON Hand, if NOT you will become their slaves! 

He told me of how a  Bible passage where it was stated that Men should honour their wife will NOT work in this part of the world. He said, seun, that scriptures doesnt work here in Africa, especially Nigeria! If you apply it, you wife will ruin your world. He even pointed example of someone we both respected but whose wife wasnt supportive. 

He told me how he settles differences in his own house. He mentioned how he managed to burn all their wedding picture BECAUSE his wife annoyed him.- An Advice from a Trusted Friend

He also told me how on one occasion, his wife got he angry that he was heading for their wedding certificate to burn to prove his annoyance.  Hmmmm! –An Advice from a Trusted Friend

Before long, as a learner in the field of marriage, i almost got stumbled because he was a well respected trusted friend. My wife was aware of our friendship before we got married. 

But eventually, i was able to correct my steps using a stronger guide from a book and today, i had to lose  him FOREVER and other type of relationship that mars a successful marriage.

I got to the point i had to choose between my friendship with him and the success of my marriage.
I made the right choice, i saved my marriage from the ill advice of a trusted friend and let him Go.

We may not know, that the kind of advice we receieve will either make our marriage flourish or make it otherwise.

We have to be courageous to lose any friend or believes that is not in anyway contributing to the success and happiness of our  marriage BECAUSE it pays to grow old in love with your partner than to grow old with a partner who “wears the skin of a stranger in the house”.

Be humble to your future, and be willing to let GO of garbage that don’t add value to the success of your marriage.

I Thank God, i have found a Book i constantly draw strength from , its called the SECRET of Family Happiness. If you have it in your home, you will FOREVER be grateful to God for showing you how to be the right partner to your spouse.

I don’t claim to have 1000 years of experience, i don’t even have 100 years experience but whether you are 24 hours old in marriage or you are 240 Years old in marriage, your happiness would surely be in learning of new ways to have a lasting marriage with peace of mind and Gods blessing because its a precious gift you treasure so much.
